Fresnel lenses have been produced in various different sizes, commonly referred to as "orders". The order chosen for any particular lighthouse varies, depending on the strength of light required as well as the dimensions of the lighthouse's lantern room. The classification of a lens is determined by the focal distance, which is the distance from the inside surface of the lens to the center of the light.
